READ IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
An Escape From Our Age
An illustrated collection of short stories by Jay Ramirez
Overview
Let go of the world for a bit and wander somewhere older, stranger, and quieter. Read in Case of Emergency is a collection of 17 fully illustrated short stories about saber-toothed gorgonopsids, cryptids, corporate robots, and other logic-defying strays of imagination, all living in the space between curiosity and comfort. The humor is dry, there’s some melancholy underneath, and it isn’t above a non-sequitur. Around 5,000 words, 76 pages, full color.
“Just you, and whatever my imagination dredged up from the fossil record.”
The opening spread: what this book is for, and what’s in it.
Each chapter opens with a short essay on why I love drawing a type of creature, then follows with a story about one of them.
After the chapter on why I love vampires comes a story about Young Nossy, the childhood of the infamous Nosferatu, who climbs the school’s forgotten bell tower and finds company there.
BigBot Corp. is one of the book’s insert pieces, written like an ad: robots designed to handle tasks you absolutely could do yourself, but would rather not.
The last chapter hands the reader the pencil. Draw your own weirdo in the box, tag me @jaydrawsthings, and we’ll all share our strange creatures and what they’ve been up to.
